Day 6 Itinerary
Drive from Höfn to Egilsstaðir and return rental car Egilsstaðir airport (Tip: lookout for waterfalls on this drive, especially along Oxi road)
Take a morning or early afternoon flight to Reykjavik and explore the city
(Below are my recommendations for where to eat and things to do in Reykjavik)
Optional: Look up if there are any active volcanoes nearby Reykjavík worth checking out. The land around the capital is known for volcanic activity. If you plan to fly over or hike to a volcanic site, add an extra day to the itinerary.
(My hotel recommendation: Center Hotels Laugavegur. Stay here or in any hotel nearby.)
1) Get breakfast at the Grai kotturinn
Small, cozy breakfast spot serving up savory dishes and coffee.
2) Take a walking tour of the city
Downtown Reykjavik is full of shops, restaurants, and street art. The best way to see it all is to take a self guided walking tour. Start at Center Hotels Laugavegur, and walk down Laugavegur street until you reach Ingólfur Square .
3) Hallgrimskirkja
This church is one of the tallest and most iconic buildings in Reykjavik. At 73 meters high, it can be seen from all over the city but the best views are up close.
4) Try Rye Bread Icecream
Ice cream shops throughout the city carry Iceland’s specialty flavor, Rye bread icecream. While it may sound strange, this flavor is delicious and a must try! I went to this location, Ísbúðin litla Valdís, a short 4 minute walk from Hallgrimskirkja church.
5) Sun Voyager Sculpture
The Sun Voyager is a large steel sculpture of a ship, located by the seaside of central Reykjavík. The sculptor, Jón Gunnar Árnason, created this piece to symbolize light and hope.
6) Explore Volcanoes
The land around Reykjavík is known for volcanic activity. Before your trip, look up if there are any active volcanoes nearby worth checking out. At the time I went, Fagradalsfjall volcano had erupted a few months prior. If you plan to fly over or hike to a volcanic site, add an extra day to the itinerary.
