Travel Tips

  • Currency: Icelandic Króna (most places in Iceland accept credit card)

  • Transportation: Although car rentals are expensive, it’s the best way to see the country and will allow you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Make sure to book your rental well in advance. I recommend renting through Budget, Europcar, or Hertz since they have pick up & drop off locations all over the island.

  • When to go/weather: Summer is the best time of year to go to Iceland for hiking and the warmest weather. With that being said, Iceland is typically only 50°F-60°F in the summer so bring warm clothing. During the summer, the sun only sets for 3-4 hours which leaves a lot sunlight and makes the day feel longer. Winter is not recommended as snow storms can make driving inaccessible.

  • Getting there: All that is needed is a passport, no visa required

  • Flights: Best airline to book through is Iceland Air. They have tons of direct flights and almost always have the best prices. Tip: Leave your airplane window open if flying at night! All throughout the year, northern lights can be spotted from from the plane and you don’t want to miss it!

  • Language: Icelandic (English is also commonly spoken)

  • Extending the trip: This Itinerary explores the southern half of Iceland, going from Reykjavik to Egilsstaðir. It takes a week to fully explore this area without being rushed. To see the northern half of the island, plan to add an additional 5-7 days to your itinerary.
